Role overview

Pranos Fusion is seeking a Computational Scientist to drive high-fidelity simulation and modeling of plasma physics phenomena in support of our fusion energy program. You will work at the intersection of theoretical plasma physics, numerical methods, and high-performance computing to accelerate the design and optimization of our tokamak systems. This role demands deep expertise in fusion-relevant software ecosystems and a strong track record of scientific computing at scale.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and run large-scale plasma physics simulations using industry-standard fusion codes (e.g., EFIT, TRANSP, SOLPS, GENE, GYRO, BOUT++, CORSICA, OMFIT).

  • Model plasma equilibrium, transport, MHD stability, heating, and confinement in tokamak geometries.

  • Develop custom numerical solvers and post-processing pipelines in Python.

  • Contribute to in-house simulation frameworks and maintain reproducible, version-controlled workflows on HPC clusters.

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and represent Pranos Fusion at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree (minimum) in Computational Physics, Plasma Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated experience with tokamak or fusion plasma simulation codes — hands-on usage of TRANSP, SOLPS-ITER, GENE, GYRO, BOUT++, CORSICA, OMFIT, or equivalent.

  • Strong programming skills in at least two of: Python, C++, Fortran.

  • Experience running and optimizing jobs on HPC clusters (SLURM, PBS, MPI/OpenMP parallelism).

  • Solid grounding in plasma physics theory: MHD, neoclassical transport, gyrokinetics, or edge plasma physics.

Preferred experience

  • Postdoctoral or industry experience in a fusion energy program.

  • Experience with machine learning or data-driven surrogate models for plasma simulation.

  • Familiarity with integrated modelling workflows and uncertainty quantification.

  • Knowledge of ITER or major tokamak experimental programs (JET, DIII-D, AUG, KSTAR).

Pranos Fusion is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to a safe, inclusive workplace.
