Role overview

Pranos Fusion is hiring an Instrumentation Engineer to design and deploy diagnostic and control instrumentation across our tokamak systems. You will work on sensor integration, signal conditioning, real-time data acquisition, and feedback control systems critical to plasma operations and machine protection.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and commission instrumentation systems for plasma diagnostics: magnetic sensors, Langmuir probes, bolometers, interferometers, and Thomson scattering systems.

  • Develop signal conditioning circuits, shielding schemes, and grounding strategies for low-noise measurement in high-EMI tokamak environments.

  • Specify, procure, and integrate data acquisition hardware (DAQ systems, digitizers, transient recorders).

  • Implement and maintain real-time control loops using PLC, FPGA, or EPICS-based control system frameworks.

  • Maintain calibration traceability for all critical measurement channels.

  • Collaborate with plasma physicists to translate measurement requirements into instrument specifications.

  • Author instrumentation design documents, calibration procedures, and maintenance manuals.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics.

  • 3+ years of experience with plasma diagnostic instrumentation in a tokamak, stellarator, or large-scale plasma laboratory.

  • Proficiency with real-time data acquisition and control frameworks (EPICS, LabVIEW, or equivalent).

  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic interference mitigation and low-noise analog circuit design.

  • Experience with high-voltage isolation, optical sensors, and vacuum-compatible transducers.

  • Familiarity with precision timing and synchronization for pulsed plasma experiments.

Preferred experience

  • Experience with ITER CODAC, MARTe2, or similar control system middleware.

  • Knowledge of PXI/PXIe-based DAQ platforms or FPGA-based digitizer systems.

  • Background in real-time feedback for plasma position and current control.

  • Experience with radiation-hard electronics or activation-aware sensor placement.

Pranos Fusion is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to a safe, inclusive workplace.
